Color Change to a Chest and Boring to Better Party #12

This is a teaser picture I gave you last week.
Did you guess what it is? A couple of you did.

Here it is. This is the before shot of the chest in the foyer. I decided I didn't want it green anymore.
I have the green chest behind the sofa in the great room and the coffee table is green, too.

So out came the paint. First I was going to paint it white and distress it.

Then I decided I wanted the blue gray color instead so I used Silvermist by SW.

Then I sanded away. I like to sand in typical spots that will be worn over time such as
the handles

and around key holes

along the legs that may get bumped

Then I brushed on my mocha glaze and took some back off. Love how it stays around the detail of this door.

Then I did an extra step and pulled out my rub n buff and rubbed it on in spots to make
it look like this is another layer of color coming through.

Here they are side by side so you can see the change.

Loving the new color. Wish it was sunny like this today, but no, it is cold and raining.
I am working on another little change to this chest if it works.

Do you like the new color or did you prefer the green?

Now let's see what you have transformed from boring to better!

It looks great Kim! I am thinking of repainting something I have recently painted as well.

Miss Char said...

Well I love them both but I think I'm most drawn to the new look. You did a fantastic job of making over the piece to look like it's just had years of love and use. Sure wish I had something to contribute this week but its been a bummer week here at the old homestead as far as decorating. Maybe next week will be better.

Looks good, Kim! I saw at furniture market last fall that neutral paint finishes were going to be more of a trend than the colored finishes. You're fitting right in. :-)

You're getting me more and more in the mood to try painting and aging a piece of furniture! How many coats of silvermist did you brush on? Did you sand with paper or steel wool? And, what is "rub n buff"? Sorry for so many questions, but I am a novice. Also, sometime could you address your thought process in choosing a color for a piece of funiture. Any insights you can give would be helpful. You're the best!

Thanks again everyone. Susan, I use sandpaper and rub n buff is a tube of colored ointment that you rub on with your finger. This one I used turns turquoise when you rub it. They also have gold, silver, bronze and other colors. I try to paint colors that go with the colors in my house.

Nancy said...

Kim, Your buffet really looks nice...it looked nice to begin with but I'm just loving the techniques you used and the overall outcome. I love that you sanded the most obvious areas of wear. Really beautiful!

What is this "buffing" color you speak of?? I use glaze all the time, but have not seen a way to add color "on top" other than just swiping a new color of paint, or drybrushing it on. That may have been what you meant, but I had to ask. It looks wonderful!! Good job!!!

I love the new color over the green You are very brave. Someday I'm going to do something similar to my Ethan Allen dining room set. I'll have to plan that while hubby is out of town. The pine look has to go.
