My First Estate Sale

I went early Friday morning to my first estate sale. I shop and consign some of my stuff at a local consignment shop called The Perfect Piece. It is an upscale consignment shop and the owner also runs estate sales. I received an email about this estate sale and since it was only a few minutes from my house and in a very upscale neighborhood I thought I would check it out. I really didn't expect to find anything that I was willing to pay for and most things were a bit over priced. I lucked up on a couple of things in the library which was the first room I ventured in.

The first thing I spied when I stepped in the library was this lamp. I have always loved this style of lamp. At first  when I saw it I thought it would probably be priced too high so I walked out and looked in the other rooms. After not finding anything else I came back to the lamp and thank goodness it was still there. Ignore the foil on the back of the sofa. That is to keep Bailey from ruining the back cushions and I forgot to move it before the photos were taken.

I love all the details of this lamp and did not even know who the maker was until I got home and looked. I lifted the lampshade here to show who it is by.

Not sure of the original price of this, but I got it for $60. I thought that was a fair price. It is perfect for my sitting room/library. I do love my horse lamp that I had here, but ready for a change.

On the same table as the lamp was this little stack of vintage leather bound French books. At least I think most of them are French.

One of them is the history of France, but it is in French so I won't be reading it. I did take two years of French in high school a gazillion years ago.

The books were only six dollars each. One of them inside said $20 in it that I guess the homeowner paid for it when she or he purchased it.

Here is the room at night. This is when I like this room the best. It has such a warm glow.

So do you think I got a good deal?

What good deals have you found lately at an estate sale or antique stores?

OOOOOH! I love your finds, Kim! I'll say...you got a great deal! That style of lamp is a bouillotte lamp. Here's a link Ito a post I did on their history. they can be hundreds of dollars...up to thousands for teh really old ones!

The books are all French...fabulous finds! You've got the history of France, Balzac's novel "Old (or Father) Goriot," Malherbe's works of poetry and some sort of book about philosophy! It's a good thing I wasn't there! I would have fought you for all of them! lol Happy week!...hugs...Debbie
PS...Baby Kitty is having a kitty cat birthday party on Friday. I hope Rusty will join us...and if Baily puts on some kitty cat ears, I bet he will be able to slip in, too!

The room looks so cozy. A perfect after supper spot. I too have foil sprinkled here and there, but more for my kitty who has taken to sharpening her claws on a few of my pieces (or eating my dried hydrangeas, bad kitty!)

You did real good Kim! My mom has all Stiffel lamps in her living room that are probably 40 years old and she remembers paying over $100 for one of her larger ones that she purchased in Ethan Allen. They still look brand new the only thing she changes out are the lamp shades. Martina

That was a fair price. Especially if it was day one of the sale. By the way you are now doomed {but in the best way} if you keep going to estate sales. I recently bought a wormy maple hand carved bowl, a handmade tile German trivet, and a Japanese box at an estate sale for a total of $19.00. It was day two of the sale and all items were half off. At that sale there was some gorgeous oil paintings and pencil etchings but I behaved. hugs♥O

Your room looks so warm and inviting in the night light.

I just found an awesome vintage rocking chair that I'll post about tomorrow. It came from the beach cottage of the next door neighbor to Katharine Hepburn in Fenwick, Old Saybrook. I am madly in love with it.

I haven't been to an auction for some time - used to go often in the early days of our marriage. There are no estate sales up here - just no tradition of that sort of thing. People consign things to auction houses. I like an estate sale!

That lamp is perfect in its new home!

I figured you'd be an estate sale champ ... who knew that you weren't. The Husband and I have gone to estate sales and auctions since we were newlyweds. Most of the furniture in our house, except the upholstered pieces, once belonged to other people and most of these came from estate sales.

Here's a tip ... don't rely on the appearance of the neighborhood to decide whether a sale is a good one or not. I have found some of my best stuff in older houses in modest neighborhoods. Many times, these families have family stuff that they have held onto, and the heirs don't want that 'old stuff'. One person's cast off is another person's treasure.

Your first Estate Sale! Oh my! When we lived in the Atlanta Area I would get the paper - find all the Estate Sales, map them out and my husband and I would have a marvelous time! He would first go to libraries to find old Bibles - I'd go to the kitchen and gardens - so much fun and amazing treasures! Love your lamp and absolutely love the books!
Great deals,
Kathy

Your find is a great lamp. I love how it looks in your library. I'm sure the original price would knock your socks off so you treasure is a great deal. I haven't been to any sales lately and missed one last weekend I'm sure was great. I've been avoiding them because I always find great things I don't need. I have a new rule I have a hard time sticking to, If something comes home with me, something goes to goodwill. Its a tough rule but I have no more storage.

Kim, I'd say you found some great buys. Love the lamp. I've been looking for a bouillotte lamp for some time, but no luck as yet. I think $60 is a terrific price.
My most recent thrift find was a set of enamel ware - 21 plates, a sugar bowl, a small bowl, a coffee pot, and a large tray. Now I need to plan an outdoor dinner! ;-)
