You Had Me at Burlap

What is it about burlap that has made it such a huge trend in decorating? I mean the stuff is scratchy and doesn't even smell good yet it is used so much in home decor. Here are some ways that I found it being used and something new I bought, too.

This is my new burlap pillow from Joss & Main that I got several weeks ago.

I was glad to get this pillow. I hesitated putting it in my basket and then it was in someone else's basket. I waited a few minutes and it became available again and I snatched it! If you shop Joss & Main then you know what I am talking about. These items are available for a short time at a discount.
I knew it would be perfect in my sitting room.

The fact that it is trimmed in leather makes it even better.

When it is cold and gray outside this is a good spot to curl up with a book. This is the most comfortable chair in the house.
Today we had a heat wave of over 75.  Isn't it still February?

Come back this weekend for a giveaway.

I don't know what it is about burlap either that makes it so hot in decor right now, but I love it too! I guess it's a reminder of Europe. It's funny, my son has those same burlap Tom's shoes that he has worn on a cruise and on a trip to St. Thomas! He says they look like island shoes! LOL

Nice pillow, Kim! That's a great pillow for you, too, with your equestrian items. I can't even imagine wearing a burlap shoe. I wonder how far you can walk before you have to start scratching.

I LOVE using burlap! Love the texture, and it's cheap fabric (I buy it at Home Depot! Ha!) And those TOMS are on my wishlist!!!

That pillow was waiting for you, Kim. It look very much at home. I can't tell you how many chairs I've recovered for clients in burlap. I love the graphics, etc., but never got using it as upholstery. Not comfy. I love using it other ways though.

My grandson told me yesterday that I was like a big pillow as he laid his head on me. If I was I'd pick to be a burlap one with a cool graphic.

I've seen tons of burlap, too. We used quite a bit of it in my daughter's wedding (who knew burlap and weddings go together?). I saw a French-looking burlap pillow in a store with fluffy tulle for trim. I'm going to try and recreate it ... we'll see. Love your pillow ... anything with a horse is beautiful. :)

I KNOW ... funny that something scratchy and smelly works soooo well! Do you own any TOMS? My brothers sell them here in their surf shop, and they can barely keep them on the shelves! Love your new pillow, too ... I can see why that comfy looking chair would be a favorite spot!

Penny @ The Comforts of Home/Flea Market Makeovers said...

I am currently making some more burlap pillows to sell in my booth.

LOVE your horse pillow! Today it was 72 here. I love this early spring...but it is suppose to have snow flurries in a couple of days here.

Kim, your new pillow is fabulous. When I was looking at new rugs for the family room this past winter, I was at a rug store and they had piles of burlap laying in the floor. The rugs from overseas had been shipped in them. I asked the store owner if I could have some and he gave me all I wanted. The burlap is a large weave and has a braid running through it. And it's actually fairly soft too. I hope to make pillows out of it for my website and/or booth.

Oh your pillow is FABULOUS!!! I would of certainly snatched it up..Our daughter is a BIG BIG BIG horse girl so I am always drawn to anything Horsey... I love the look of burlap but could certainly do without the smell and scratchiness of it... :)

Olive Cooper said...

Love the leather trim on it. I just ordered a jute pouf/stool from OKL which is odd for me to do and it has the Union Jack Flag on top on it in canvas. Buying from the flash sale sites is sort of nerve wracking and if I ever bought something really expensive I would be nervous as there is no returning it.

yes, it doesn't smell good does it? But it has that texture and that color that us antique-ers love, so I guess we can get around the smell if it looks good! I love that pillow, good score! devon

Love the pillow. And that chair! Wowzers. I'll have to keep James Bond from sneaking in your house to swipe it. He wants a leather wing back so badly it hurts him. :)
Thanks for the photo of the grain sack! It reminds me that I have one I need to put up on my etsy shop. It's not French (sadness), but German and still cool.
Have a great day!

I have a shop owner friend who just returned from market saying that "burlap" was the big thing for spring. I don't see it as french anything no matter what is stamped on it. I grew up on a farm and it came straight out of the barn!

janet said...

Morning Kim,

Love your pillow and those lampshades are very pretty....HOWEVER...those French chairs are leaving me stone cold. They look like the most uncomfortable chairs ever. I like a nice accent of burlap here and there, but NOT as a major piece of furniture.

Just being honest here ;->
