How is the weekend going for you so far? Hope you are doing some fun things. I worked in the yard all day long and it was so hot and humid. I kept taking breaks and would come inside and drink water and cool off and then get back to it.
I thought I would share some pictures of some things outside.
I tried some different flowers on the deck this year. I planted three pots with Speedwell Veronica and ice plant and added them to this chippy worn window box that I bought last year. I use to plant flowers in the yard, but the deer kept eating them so now I just fill pots.
I love the look of the spiny looking speedwell. I had never seen or heard of ice plant before, but I like something to grow over the edge of the pots and this is growing sooooooo fast. Two weeks ago it was not over the pots and now look at it.
It seems someone else loves the speedwell Veronica, too.
Such an unusual color.
I took this shot and the next one at a different time of day. Seems the lighting makes the colors deeper.
I have a basil plant growing on the deck. Looks like I need to use some of it. My, it grows fast.
I planted these gorgeous deep purple petunias in another pot on the deck. I can grow petunias without killing them. The green leafy plant is a zinnia with no flowers. Oops, no it is a gerbera daisy like a commenter told me. I will not plant these again. Every time the flowers die and don't come back. Can't remember what the yellow flowers are. I am not good with flower names obviously.
Now I know petunias are not perennials, but these came back this year. This is a large pot on the driveway close to Mr. Savvy's garage. I had some other petunias come back this year, too. I guess it was because of the mild winter this year.
And I just found out yesterday that we have four Carolina wren babies in this potted tree on the deck. I bought this little evergreen tree back at Christmas, that is why there is Christmas foil around the pot, and we haven't planted it yet and this little family is residing in it for now. After they leave it will be planted. Aren't they cute sleeping?

I think your flower is a Gerbera Daisy. They love lots of water and sunshine and act like yours do if they are planted too deep. I've had disappointments with those in previous years but I'm trying them again this year. They look beautiful so far.:)

ReplyDeleteLove your plants, Kim. I worked outside all day along today, too. I got a ton done...and a few more plants in pots. I really love the speedwell..it is such a pretty plant and the color is wonderful. I have not see the ice plants anywhere but I really like yours.

Your little bird chickies are so cute! I'm bad at plant names and just about everything else about gardening. Something (bugs)just ate all our petunias! If we grow in pots we have to be sure to water them at least once a day. I do like your draping iceplant!
ReplyDeleteI love your planters Kim. The speedwell will spread and get larger and it looks gorgeous. It's a perennial, so just cut it back in the fall and it will come back next spring. Ice plant is really pretty when it blooms. Many of the freeways in SoCal are lined with it and it's gorgeous. Your basil is going to get a lot bigger. Last year I had one plant that was 3 feet wide and 4 feet tall. It's really easy to dry, especially right before it goes to seed.

ReplyDeleteCute little birdies! We had to cut down 2 trees in our front yard yesterday, but I first checked to make sure there were no bird nests hidden in the branches. I guess you just never know where they'll show up!

ReplyDeleteIt's really sweet of you to wait until the babies leave the nest to plant your tree! There are tricks to trimming basil to make it produce more. It creates two branches for every one you cut. ~ Maureen

ReplyDeleteYour flowers look great. The yellow flowers may be coreopsis?, if I spelled that correctly. The daisies come in annuals and perennials (sp?), so you must have gotten the annual version. They are usually more of them available and they're less expensive.

ReplyDeleteHi Kim....Am so aware of working, getting hot, coming in, drinking, resting and going back out when we lived in Texas all those years. We don't have the humidty here though so its not quite so back.

Over the years I've found that sometimes its just better to wait then to rush and do something like plant...and then get such a wonderful surprize like you did. That happened just recently to us in our own yard. And what a blessing it was. Somethings just don't need to be rushed thats for sure.
LOL....Love the wrens in your potted tree. Those sweet little wrens will nest in the strangest places and for such tiny little birds they build big nest and messy ones too. I found a nest in our potting shed the other day. Sadly I had to remove it, otherwise the baby birds would not have made it. Happy Memorial Day Kim.

ReplyDeleteThis time of year I have birds nesting in many of my hanging ferns and pots....and not to mention nesting on top of ceiling fans in the porch!..Next year, the fans are being turned on early!..They are cute, but what a mess they can make!!.....Beautiful flowers Kim!

Oh my goodness! I'm in love with the baby bird picture. So sweet. Glad you are leaving them alone for now. Ha! Love your new plants in your porch planter. The yellow flowers that you don't know the name of look like coreopsis (not sure if I spelled that right). It is a perennial. I had some at one time in my yard. Good idea to enjoy your flowers on your back deck. They are not only safer, but you can see them from your family room too! Whew! Sure is hot outside. We skipped right over Spring and straight to summer!

Hi, I've just planted the Veronica Speedwell on my deck this year (it is only my second year at growing) and I was concerned about the brown forming at the base of the flowers. I see in your pictures the same thing has happened but you don't seem concerned? Is this normal activity for the plant. They look very healthy otherwise.
