I clearly remember when I was around ten years old having that all-important first talk with my mom about the changes that would be taking place in my body called puberty. Funny how I can remember that like it was yesterday, but I can hardly remember much from yesterday or even this morning. She handed me a little, pale blue, paperback book the pediatrician had given her that explained puberty and how my body was going to go through all these changes. She explained about the menstrual cycle, that it wasn't anything to be afraid of, and that it was all a natural part of life.
Of course I did not care for this natural part of life or the pains that went with it. She told me if I ever needed to talk to her about anything that she was there to listen. I am so grateful for that. A lot of children's parents don't discuss these matters with them.

There was no 2nd talk, but Poise brand wants to change that. Poise is introducing a new feminine wellness line with five products to help through this life stage. There is a Roll-On Cooling Gel or Body Cooling Towelettes helping you feel comfortable and refreshed. I wish I had those a couple of years ago. There are fresh panty fresheners and a feminine wash available, too. When the personal lubricant becomes available I will try it out.
I'm so glad the Poise brand wants to help women through this life stage with confidence by being the first to start The 2nd Talk . This will be a whole new way for women over forty to talk about menopause and other wellness issues along with the introduction of the new products.
Poise brand wants to rally 1 million women to pledge to have The 2nd Talk by World Menopause Day on October 18. By joining the conversation, women will gain more menopause knowledge and support. Join the conversation at The2ndTalk.com.

Yes, there should have been a "second talk" and there will be with my daughter. ;) blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteI'm glad we had this talk because I am just starting the peri-menopause and I'm not liking it. I feel most confident right after I leave my spin class at the gym. I may not look any different from when I came in, but I feel different. Thanks, Kim!
ReplyDeleteOh, the wonderful years of perio and meno...NOT! LOL! I am also having thyroid issues with that and WOW! I never knew a human body could spontaneously combust! OH...And my daughter DEFINITELY knows about this. Here's to eventually getting past those hot flashes...
ReplyDeletewhen i look back i now realize why my mom had some issues at moment's....course now i realize why i had issues also thank goodness i feel mine were mild......i stopped my menstral when i was 40 not sure why but later on found out my 1 aunt also did so may have been heritiy.....this what i call 3rd stage is miresable i hate it i'd take my period back any day....moody, weight gain, aches pain's, depression ugh just hate it........
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! I love your honesty. I have just started with the hot flashes and it is not fun! Had a hysterectomy at 30 so have been dealing with vaginal dryness for years. Look forward to seeing what Poise has to offer!
ReplyDeleteYou really are SAVVY
ReplyDeleteI suffered with awful hot flashes ~ several an hour and all day long for a year and a half. They were like a rocket taking off... you know the fire that propels the rocket! Could have used that cooling gel! I found a doctor who prescribed bio-identical hormones(bhrt)and have been taking them since March. No more menopausal symptoms. None. If you are going to take hormones...only take bio-identical as synthetic hormones are not safe. That cooling gel sounds wonderful on a hot summer day!
ReplyDeleteI'm having this second talk with my daughters right now. I want them to be more prepared than I was. Bring on the cooling gels!!!!
ReplyDeleteI feel most confident when I'm having a good hair day and I'm dressed in clothing that fits me well.
ReplyDeletemami2jcn at gmail dot com
Great talk Kim!~ It really stinks sometimes for us. Glad you don't have it too bad either. Some days are better than others for me, and I have a feeling I have a long road ahead.
ReplyDeleteI remember that wintery snowy morning standing by an open window teaching sixth grade students. I can only imagine what they were thinking.
ReplyDeleteWeight gain and hair loss seem to be my changes brought to me by my nemesis that being the state of post menopausal.
Kim, I have gone through menopause with SLIGHT symptoms. I had hot flashes but not really bad. I did not go on hormones, too scared. Worked out fine. I did however experience the vaginal dryness so my Dr. gave me a prescription for a hormone cream and it worked GREAT!!!! This is a great idea for women to share their thoughts and wisdom. XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteI feel the most confident when I'm accomplishing something. When I start and finish a project and it comes out great! It makes me feel useful and productive.
ReplyDeleteI have been in peri-menopause for awhile now. I had no idea when to expect this as my grandmother is dead and my mom had a hysterectomy when I was around 15. I feel like an alien has moved into my body sometimes! LOL The towelettes sound wonderful and I'll be looking for them. I just moved here a few months ago and need to find a doctor to talk to regarding over the counter supplements.
ReplyDeleteI am only 29 and have gone through menopause as well. However for me it wasn't brought on naturally. In 2009 or beginning of 2010 after I started chemo/radiation for cervical cancer is when I began my hot flashes and etc. I didn't get a talk, I wasn't even warned by my oncologist that this would happen, since they pinned my ovaries up during surgery I thought they would be spared. I just remember being hot all the time and finally told my dr and he said I was going through menopause......THANKS for the heads up! It was awful for me and so scary going through something like that so young. I don't know what to expect from my body in the next 20 years. I do use premarin (estrogen cream) occasionally when my dr recommends it after I have my 3 month pap, but I'm scared to because of any possible side effects. I think for me the worst part is the lack of sex drive toally TMI I know, but it is scary. My husband is 5 years younger than I am and we have only been married for 5 years.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow I wrote a book. I will definitely check out these items. Thank you Kim for sharing.
I feel more confident since I joined Martial Arts. I have good work outs, and I feel energetic and confident.
ReplyDeleteI feel great in an air-conditioned room or car! Oh yes, I am 51 and post-men for about 6 years now. Still have the knobs (ovaries) just no oven (uterus). My mom and I joked about this analogy because I feel like an oven most days. I can be casually talking with someone and I flash - it is so embarrassing! My MD won't give me an RX for hormones as he feels that they can cause more problems than not. Wild Yam cream seems to do the trick and Black Cohosh. I am most confident when standing in front of the freezer!

Oh my goodness! No one talked to me either about this stuff; my mom went on hormones within a few years of her hysterectomy at 33, so never experienced the hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause that I have. I thought the hot flashes had finally stopped three years ago, but they suddenly came back this spring. They seem to be slowing down now, but combine a hot flash with the 100 degree days we are having and I will push anyone out of my way to get my head into a freezer! That cooling gel sounds divine.
ReplyDeleteNow to answer your question; what makes me feel most confident? It's when I listen to the voice inside me that knows the direction I need to go. At my age, I no longer have time for the what ifs that besieged me when I was younger. It's now or never!

I think it's always nice to have older friends or sisters so we get a heads up on what will be next. But I guess life is not always perfect. Guess I'll need to join in the 2nd talk to find out more...for now, that Roll-On cooling gel sounds really good. To answer your questions, I feel most confident when I do what I love, which is to cook for my family.

I was finally able to lose the weight I packed on at the beginning of menopause. I feel much better but it took years.
